Great for letter recognition and alphabet sounds
Preschool kids love this puzzle. I love that it emphasizes the alphabet sounds and letter recognition that we are learning in class. Younger children go so quickly through moving the pieces that they don’t hear the entire message but older children take the time to listen. But you’ll see and be amazed by what the children pickup on by hearing and seeing what they themselves experience and watching the other children interact with the puzzle too. Children learn in many different ways, this puzzle may be what triggers their brain to click on, so they get comfortable with showing what they know!

2 year old’s favorite!
My 24 month old got this for Christmas and has played with it every single day. In that time, he has learned to identify and say all of his letters! He is still letter obsessed and loves carrying the pieces around, bringing them to me and telling me which one he has. Couldn’t love this puzzle more. I’d do anything for a numbers version!

It could be better
We really had high expectations for this board. It is well made, with bright colors, an on/off button, and nice colors. The board makes sounds when you remove the letters, which is based on the assumption that your little one will keep the letters in place and, one by one, remove them. Not the case for us. If the board is without letters, just passing your hand over the board will activate it, so overall, it can be confusing and difficult to use. Maybe it’s intended for older kids. Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked very well for us.NOTE: Beware that if you forget to turn it off and leave it around without letters, you might wake up early in the morning with spooky Ms. Rachel talking about letters.

Not beginner friendly
Absolutely adorable but does not work as intended. Because this toy is light/motion sensored it’s easy for it to say the wrong letter. For example if you are placing the A in the spot the H underneath might say “H” when again you are holding the A. It could be confusing for littles (not beginner friendly)

What’s with the hype?
As an elementary school teacher, I was immediately on board to purchase this item when I first heard about it. Everyone spoke so highly of this product. After watching my child use it, I no longer understand the hype. Unless your child pulls the letter off and waits patiently to hear all of what Ms. Rachel says, they may or may not even hear what letter it is, let alone the sound and word associated. My child likes to dump the whole puzzle and put the pieces back. This is ineffective for two reasons. First, when placing letters back, nothing is spoken. The child is learning to fit shapes not learn letters and their corresponding sounds. Second, when placing a letter in the wrong spot, something kids learning their letters will do, recognizing it won’t fit and removing it, Ms. Rachel then speaks about the empty space and not the letter they hold in their hand. The child is now not correlating the right letter with the verbal information being shared. See video for reference. The shapes of the letters is far from helpful in learning letters and knowing where they belong on the board. As shown in the image, the V and A are exactly the same (except A has a tiny bit deeper inlet). The I and Z are exactly the same and the H is a rectangle….in no world are these letters similar and this puzzle does not teach kids the actual outlined shape of any letter.

My daughter LOVES to play with this Ms Rachel Wooden Phonics Alphabet Sound Puzzle! My daughter who is almost 2.5 is already recognizing letters and I have this puzzle to help thank for that. My only complaint about it is that the letters make a sound only when you take the letters off the puzzle. I would prefer it make the sound as my daughter places the letters in their corresponding spots on the puzzle. Minor complaint but overall a good purchase that I would recommend!
Brought this bag for gym however got delivered and wasn’t there and not eligible for a refund well done –
Fantastic product and arrived earlier then expected also price was respectable too

Our toddler who is working on letter sounds loves this! Between the animal pictures, the sounds and the easy to pickup wood pieces, it keeps them busy for a solid 15 minutes at a time.Note: make sure you have 2xAA batteries on hand and a small x head screwdriver to open the battery compartment.Pros:- Not too light sensitive! Other wooden sound puzzles need fairly bright lighting to operate, but this one didn’t seem to have that issue.- really solid build quality! All finished wood with no sharp corners or roughness.- the sound quality is probably the best I have seen in a sound puzzle! The sounds are super clear with no noticeable static.- our toddler loves ms. Rachel’s voice which is also a huge plus as it keeps them engaged.- it’s a Melissa and Doug product which is a very reputable company who definitely screen their products for safety.Cons:- the only con I can think of is it is pricier than other sound puzzles, but at the end of the day, for the number of sensors and pieces it makes sense it would be more.Very happy with our purchase!10/10 would recommend!

It’s just like Miss Rachel – the letters are said out loud, and then it tells you a word that starts with that letter. It’s really fun and educational at the same time. The letters are bright, colorful, and easy for little hands to hold. I like that it keeps my kids engaged while actually learning their ABCs. It feels sturdy and well-made, so I’m not worried about it breaking easily. Such a great learning toy, especially for toddlers and preschoolers. Highly recommend for any parent who wants a fun way for kids to practice letters and words!
