A Good Option When Exterior Solar Screens Are Not Feasible
I really needed a solution for an east facing 70 x 45 upstairs master bedroom window that makes life miserable during the summer months with heat and brightness that is constantly waking me up earlier than I want, and it’s also adjacent to my wife’s work-at-home desk which is like working next to a radiator all day for her. I have purchased this type of blackout curtain before to cover the windows of my garage door, so I knew what to expect in terms of heat and light blocking, but the problem that many make mention of is that the heat causes the adhesives on the hook and loop strips to fail and it’s difficult to prevent light leakage on the edges. I was able to use magnets in the garage, and I considered doing that for this window, but I would have needed to attach some metal to the aluminum window frames that the magnets would stick to, and, even then, it would have been a fiddly operation to get up under the window blinds to install and remove the curtains. So, my solution was to build some inexpensive frames that could be quickly and easily inserted and removed into the window as needed. I built my frames from four 1in x 2in x 8ft furring strips and then used spray adhesive and staples to attach the fabric. The frames slide up easily and fit securely behind the window blind headrail and, other than a tiny and insignificant shaft of light on the window sill, are essentially providing 100% blockage. The screens do feel warm to the touch, which was expected, but the small amount of heat radiating into the room is nowhere near the level it used to be. I realize the best solution would be to install a solar screen outside the window, but I’m at a “not going on the roof” age, so this is a pretty good second option. These curtains appear to be made from pretty durable feeling material and they are doing exactly what they say they will.

Just what I needed. It’s easy to hang although the Velcro didn’t stick real well to the walls so we used thumb tacks to make sure there were no gaps and now we have a super dark room. I was able to cut easy to fit the window. It’s thin plastic-like material so I have it behind drapes.

Hack if HOA doesn’t allow reflective window coverings
These shades are performing well for me. I like that it comes with a storage pouch, measuring tape, and Velcro. I live in a desert where we experience +115° heat. So I’ve been trying to come up with creative ways to beat the summer heat. But my HOA won’t allow reflective window coverings. And their rules make it impossible to find window film that fits their stringent criteria (not reflective and only specific color). Anyway I have professionally installed Venetian blinds that don’t do enough on their own for heat. So I added blackout curtains, which help. And I decided to add these shades over the blinds, under the curtains for additional heat blocking. I didn’t cut to size. I have added this shade to the hottest windows in my home. I attached the shade with binder clips from Walmart, because I didn’t think the Velcro would stick to my textured walls and I can’t let this reflective material be seen from outside due to HOA. My window heat would probably weaken the Velcro adhesive even if HOA wasn’t an issue. My video and photos show how it looks now. Although, I do have 1 window that only has blinds; I don’t have a 20ft ladder to install additional coverings. So that is where the light is coming from on my video. All this together has helped keep my home cooler and darker. And so far, my electric bill is lower than last year. My a/c doesn’t have to run as often. The true test will be once we hit +100° soon. High 90’s so far. I will update then. I plan to buy more of these shades for the rest of my windows. These were easy to install, and seems like a quality opaque material. The price was better than other options I saw for the window size I needed.

Utilicé antes las cortinas de viaje black out de Amazon basics y estas sin duda son mucho mejores y más baratas. Yo las tengo en un ventanal de 2m de alto por 2.40 de longitud, expuestas al sol todo el día y no se han desprendido los círculos de Velcro que vienen para sostener las “cortinas” las volvería a comprar y las recomiendo bastante.
